I started journaling almost as soon as I learned how to write complete sentences and I started hoarding notebooks as soon as I had enough money to buy them. I had more than two dozen journals my whole life and I still have most of them. Reading a “diary entry“ of my 10-year-old self ranting about a certain boy who does not like her back makes me cringe so hard I want to peel off my skin. However, I’m glad she wrote them. I actually wish she wrote more! It’s easy for me now to dismiss the experiences of that 10-year-old as juvenile and insignificant but her thoughts, her experiences, and her many little decisions made me who I am today.
Journaling helped me (and still helping me) make sense of what is happening around me. It allows me to look back to the past with a fresh perspective. It helps me navigate my present world. Most importantly, it helps me visualize and look forward to the future.
